On 12 August 2014 the athletics fans packing the Letzigrund stadium witnessed an extraordinary spectacle, and not just in terms of sport. The first day of the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich was celebrated with a grand opening ceremony.
The high-wire artist Freddy Nock, DJ Bobo, Sunrise Avenue and over 1,000 dancers and performers opened the event in festive and spectacular fashion. It was the first time since 1954 that Switzerland had hosted the European Athletics Championship.
An impressive 358 million TV viewers and a record number of overnight stays in Zurich in the month of August underlined the high profile of the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Zurich.
The opening ceremony and the grand finale were part of a joint project by Compresso and 3Friends.
